More chairs...and a headboard
We're slowly making our way through all the random chairs clogging up our storage room. We've been working on them since about October last year... and we admit to being a little over them! But we're almost at the end - thank goodness.

Wee little slipper chair
This wee little slipper chair was a commission piece for an equally wee little 3 year old. And I'm sure it has turned out just as adorable as she is too!
Commissions
Commission works are more stressful than working on my own pieces, but they are great because they give me the opportunity to work with different fabrics and paints that I wouldn't normally use or do.
Here is a few random commission works I've recently done.
This first rocking chair was going into a nursery so I replaced the loose cushion with a full upholstered base to avoid slipping. I think it looks much more stylish too now.
After stripping all the varnish off the woodwork I discovered a lovely multicoloured frame... the arms were a deep mahogany red, and the base a lighter teak colour. So instead of staining I retained the natural colour and gave them 4 or 5 coats of stain clear coat. Lovely!
I was given a matching pair of these Viking mid-century loungers below. If you look carefully the curved arm rests are multi-coloured..... it has red teak inlaid into light oak. The customer wanted the frame stained dark but the armrests to be retained as-is.
Last but not least was this lovely reproduction antique ottoman. The orginal upholstery was chunky and bulbous (is there such a word? lol). I trimmed down the inner sponge to create a streamlined, modern look. Much better.

Royal Treatment
When you mix ruby red velvet with sparkly diamonds you end up with something fit for a princess. This bedroom wing chair has certainly received the royal treatment with all that bling going on.
The buttons are most spectacular....I brought them on a recent trip to Shanghai and loving wrapped them in tissue paper for the trip home in my hand luggage. :)
What I love about this chair is that is both compact and low. That means PERFECT for a dressing room. I can imagine me buckling on my turquoise wedges right now...
This is only the second time I've done deep button work. The first was a bit of a disaster, although it still looked good on the whole.
This one isn't 100% perfect either.....but hey, nobody is so why should this chair be too! Besides, the bling bling diamonds make up for any imperfections with the fabric folds don't ya think!

"Welbilt" Slipper Chair
It was a sad day for us today. We took our beloved elderly cat Sassy to the vet to be put to sleep after developing cancer in her white ear and pink nose. She was 17 years old so had lived a very long and happy life with us. We love and will miss her. RIP Sas. XXX

Chair of a thousands looks
I listed this bridge chair on TradeMe yesterday but before I could post a blog entry about it someone brought it via buy now. Great stuff! I love buynows and quick sales... it frees up time and space to do other stuff. But there is an interesting wee story to this chair, which I'm itching to tell you.
When I originally brought it it looked like this:
The wood was oak and the upholstery was a stiff, old, textured vinyl. It had definitely seen better days, but the overall stance of the chair was gorgeous.
Aside from the small chair in my first project, this bridge chair was the first REAL upholstery I ever did. I stripped it down, used scraps of fabric in place of webbing (LOL... but I didn't know what I was doing back then) and re-upholstered it in a lovely fabric called English Rose Petite.
And it ended up looking like this:
This chair then lived in our little dining room for a long time. It was incredibly comfortable and everyone in the family loved it... including Sassy the cat.
Fast forward to September 2011. We decided to do some house extensions - we added a garage workshop, a conservatory, extended the third bedroom and extended the dining room. After the reno's the fabric on my chair just wasn't working anymore so I put the chair aside until I could find something more suitable.
Fast forward to December 2011. I went over to China with my girlfriend Anne, travelling from Beijing down to Shanghai. Whilst we were there we visited an ENORMOUS textile market... we were like kids in a candy store! At one little stall we found a stack of remnants for 15 yuan a piece. Translated to NZ dollars, thats just $3! Score!
Deep down I found the most gorgeous piece of thick orange floral.... I was in love and knew it would look great in my new colour scheme. And so I re-re-upholstered it, and here's the third view:
Fast forward to June 2012. Because we now have a larger dining area (although still small by normal standards) we decided to replace our little round table with a larger rectangle oak one. That meant more room for more food (hehe), but less room for my lovely bridge chair! OMG I was gutted. It was unfortunately the end of an era I'm sad to say.
Fast forward to yesterday and I finally decided to let go and list it on trademe. Today it sold via buynow. Yes!
But thats not all....there's a twist....
The buyer wants it reupholstered. Again.
Back to the English Rose Petite it originally was!!
LMAO!!!!
So I will have to (happily) strip off the gorgeous burnt orange fabric and experience a flash of deja vu as I re-re-re-upholster it in the shabby chic fabric. Who'd have thought... :)))

White and black wing rocker
You wouldn't believe how much anguish this upholstery project has given me, and how many months its taken to complete!
First it took months trying to figure out what fabric to use. Nothing I looked at really fitted it. Now I'm not fussy person, but this chair had an unusual shape I just couldn't dress. I finally came across this lovely white and black embroidered fabric and I thought PERFECT. It upholstered well in this chair here. But....
But perfect it wasn't, well not at first. The fabric is embroidered and embroidery means puckering. When you stretch the fabric out its fine, but when its loose its not. So I upholstered the seat, then the back rest, yup all good. Then I put the back cover on. Oh no. Because this is a looser fitted piece the puckering looked awful. Arrrrgggg.
I took it off and tried to stabilise it with fusible webbing. Nope. Fail again.
So I thought right, I'll buy some cool contrasting fabric and upholster the back and around the bottom seat skirt. Maybe a b&w stripe. But I couldn't find any.
I went on holiday with my friend Anne to China. I took a sample of the fabric and looked at the fabric stores in Beijing. No luck. I scoured the textile markets in Shanghai. Nada. I travelled half way around the world and visited the most ENORMOUS fabric warehouse you can imagine, you'd think I'd be able to find a couple of metres of lousy fabric!
Fast forward 5 months. I pulled the blinking chair out of my storage unit last weekend and took another look at it. Hmmm, I wonder if I could iron the fabric? So I did.
And it kind of worked.
Hmmmm, how about trying some spray starch.
BINGO!
It worked awesomely!!
Thank goodness.... I was almost ready to bin this flipping thing. ARRRRGGGGG

Key Lime Pie Chairs
I've named these two kids chairs "Key Lime Pie Chairs".
Why?
Well, the lime bit is obvious as the fabric is lime green and white. But the key part was because it is put together with hexagon threads.... which you need allen keys to undo. :) hehehehe.
I had to tear the shed/garage/kitchen junk drawer apart to find the blinking keys. I HATE LOOKING FOR THINGS but I'm sure its God's way to teaching me patience. And tolerance. Which is probably the reason I'm married to my dear hubby too.... ;)

Funky Retro Armchairs + Footstool
I love love love these!!!

Tangerine Rocker
Sometimes when you're doing upholstery EVERYTHING seems to go wrong.
Occassionally everything goes RIGHT.
With this chair everything went perfectly and as a result the workmanship was top notch. I love it when a plan comes together! :)
This rocking chair came to me in an ugly 1990s type fabric, but as I peeled pack the layers discover it had been recovered 3 times, each layer still intact! The original fabric was a barkcloth floral, shame it was too badly damaged to salvage!
The bones were in excellent shape, as was the foam. The fabric was a top quality Warwick that was divine to sew and work with. The photos don't do this fabric justice to be honest.
The woodwork was in great condition overall. I just rubbed it back a little to remove any lasting varnish, then applied a brown stain. A polymer varnish finished it off and gave it a subtle sheen.
Found a new home
A while back a sold a gorgeous mid-century chair to the most lovely lady who had a passion for colour. Her love of colour matched her bright and bubbly personality to a tee, so no wonder she wanted furniture with a little life!
She was nice enough to send me a photo the other day showing her new chair in-situ! And it looks great. I can see flecks of the same green and circle shapes in the painting too.... great match!

Restored 1970s Armchair
I recently decided to attend an upholstery night class, more-so for the companionship but I've learnt a lot of new tips and tricks already. This chair below was my "project chair". It was stripped, strenghtened, re-webbed and new sponges added.
But the great thing about this chair is I've upholstered it in a gorgeous boucle fabric from the 1970s! So, this chair really HAS been restored back to its former glory. :)

Raspberry Side Chair
This chair is just lovely. It has been stained in a dark black/brown that really suits the style. The upholstery is in raspberry red faux suede.... "Macrosuede" by Warwick Fabrics.

Retro Air Rest Sofa & Armchair
I have to admit to LOVING this refurb project! LOVED IT.
I had so much fun and I'm in love with the end result. Again, I want to keep it.... but we have....
1. A tiny house, and
2. Extensions happening shortly so we have no room to store them.
Rolls eyes...
